The CSO designs Sustainability Accounting & Finance

The CSO is responsible for implementing relevant sustainability-based accounting frameworks to supplement the company's current financial metrics. An Environmental financial impact valuation (natural capital accounting) is now growing as a necessary supplement to standard financial accounts. A Carbon accounting and emissions inventory management strategy is owned by the CSO working alongside the CFO to ensure that the ESG data is well integrated with the financial accounting systems. The financial disclosure of climate and ESG risks, ESG cost-benefit analysis, ROI calculations, green finance and sustainable investment evaluation, and analysis of internal carbon pricing and internal carbon fee implementation are just some of the roles of environmental accounting. These areas, in addition to ESG capital expenditure planning and tracking the financial side of sustainability initiatives are important to establish the ESG impact on financial performance. As companies get more involved in sustainability-linked loans and green bond reporting, the CSO will be involved in understanding and evaluating the tax implications of sustainability initiatives, and the financial risk quantification of such instruments. Other financially linked areas for the CSO include the engagement in green procurement cost management, life cycle costing for sustainability projects, and conducting and maintaining climate-related financial scenario analysis. As the CSO role develops, it is clear that the ESG integration into financial planning and analysis will be an important driver of the CSO.
