ISO 59004:2024 is the first international standard to provide a universal definition of the circular economy and establish the principles, vocabulary, and implementation framework that underpin all other ISO 59000-series standards.
Published in June 2024 after five years of development involving seventy-five national standardisation bodies, it provides the shared language and conceptual foundation that organisations need before implementing circular economy strategies or measuring circularity performance. This course develops participants' working knowledge of ISO 59004 in full.
Content covers the standard's six foundational principles — systems thinking, value creation, value sharing, resource management and traceability, and ecosystem resilience — and how they apply in practice; the thirteen-step circularity action hierarchy (refuse, rethink, source, reduce, repair, reuse, refurbish, remanufacture, repurpose, cascade, recycle, recover energy, and re-mine) and how organisations prioritise actions within it; implementation guidance for transitioning from linear to circular models including stakeholder engagement, ecosystem relationship design, and regulatory alignment; the standard's three appendices covering circular economy drivers, non-exhaustive action examples, and sustainable development perspective integration; how ISO 59004 connects to ISO 59010 (business model transition), ISO 59020 (circularity measurement), ISO 14001 (environmental management), and ESRS E5 (resource use and circular economy); and practical assessment exercises applying the standard's implementation guidance to participant organisations.
Suitable for sustainability managers, operations directors, product managers, procurement professionals, ESG teams, and those preparing their organisation to adopt and report on circular economy principles.
